Why 316L Stainless Steel for Implants

316L stainless steel is a commonly specified material for many implant-related components due to its unique combination of properties:

  • Biocompatibility in surgical implant applications
  • Corrosion resistance in physiological environments (low carbon "L" for reduced carbide precipitation)
  • Mechanical strength and toughness
  • Availability and established standards: ASTM F138/F139 and ISO 5832-1 (as applicable to your specification)

Typical applications include:

  • Orthopedic trauma plates, screws, and fixation components
  • Spinal hardware and small precision connectors
  • Dental implant-related components and abutment interfaces
  • Custom pins, rivets, and micro-scale implant mechanisms
  • Non-standard implant-related subcomponents designed by R&D teams

Note: Final material grade, condition, and standards are produced to your drawing and purchase specification.

Expertise in 316L Stainless Steel Implant Machining

🖥️

5-Axis CNC Machining

For complex geometries and precision interfaces. Our 5-axis capability reduces setups and improves accuracy.

⚙️

Swiss-Type Turning

Ideal for small, tight-tolerance parts with fine details. Bar-fed and multitasking solutions for high efficiency.

🔬

Micro Precision Machining

Small features, thin walls, and fine details with optimized feeds/speeds to manage work hardening and burr control.

We use optimized feeds/speeds, coolant control, chip evacuation, and deburring strategies to maintain surface integrity and repeatable quality.

Typical 316L Implant Components We Support

  • Trauma plates, locking and non-locking screw components
  • Spinal connectors, spacers, and small precision housings
  • Dental interfaces, abutment subcomponents, and micro fixtures
  • Custom fixation elements, pins, and fasteners designed for implants
  • Prototype-to-production variants of non-standard implant parts

We manufacture to customer drawings and specifications. If you need a standard, off-the-shelf implant, we are not the right supplier.

Tolerances, Features, and Surface Quality

±0.005
mm tight tolerance

On critical features where feasible, depending on geometry and process.

0.05
mm edge break

Controlled deburring and edge-break callouts as specified.

Ra
low surface finish

Machining strategies for low Ra surfaces; finishing support upon request.

Provide explicit tolerances, GD&T, and surface roughness targets on your drawings. We will review and give DFM feedback to align quality, cost, and lead time.

Finishing and Post-Processing for 316L Implants

Available finishing support based on your specification:

  • Passivation (e.g., ASTM A967/AMS 2700 methods as required)
  • Electropolishing for improved surface smoothness and corrosion performance
  • Mechanical polishing and micro-finishing for critical interfaces
  • Ultrasonic cleaning and controlled packaging
  • Laser marking per customer instruction (traceability, lot codes)

Finishing routes are selected to meet your drawing and application needs. We coordinate with trusted partners to deliver consistent results.

Our Manufacturing Process

1

Drawing and model review

We analyze your 2D drawings and 3D models to understand critical features.

2

DFM feedback

Focused on manufacturability, repeatability, and inspection clarity.

3

Material control and traceability

Per lot and standard per your PO/specification.

4

Precision machining

Controlled parameters for 316L with in-process checks.

5

Final inspection and documentation

Feature-by-feature as specified, First Article Inspection upon request.

6

Repeat order management

Consistent future runs with stable communication and process control.

Quality and Documentation

Quality is central to implant machining. We focus on dimensional accuracy, process consistency, and traceability. Upon request, we support:

Inspection reports (feature-by-feature)
First Article Inspection
Material traceability and heat/lot documentation
Batch records and measurement data

We manufacture to your drawings and specifications and help reduce manufacturing risk through clear communication and process control.

DFM Tips for 316L Stainless Steel Implant Parts

1. Define critical features and only tighten tolerances where necessary.
2. Add small corner radii where possible to reduce tool stress and burrs.
3. Specify thread standards (metric/UN/ISO) and tolerances; confirm pilot diameters and runout.
4. Provide surface finish targets by function (e.g., Ra for sliding or mating interfaces).
5. Indicate edge-break or chamfer requirements to standardize deburring.
6. Call out passivation/electropolish requirements and marking positions.

We will review your drawings and provide practical feedback before machining.
